Test Instructions

The Serum Ammonia test measures the exact concentration of ammonia circulating in your bloodstream. Ammonia is a metabolic waste product generated primarily by bacteria in your intestines and by your body’s cells during the breakdown of protein. In a healthy body, the liver rapidly processes this toxic compound, converting it into a harmless substance called urea, which is then safely excreted through your urine. However, if the liver is severely damaged or if there are genetic defects in the body’s waste-clearing systems, serum ammonia levels can quickly escalate. Because ammonia can easily cross the blood-brain barrier, elevated levels act as a dangerous neurotoxin that can cause severe neurological complications, altered mental states, and cognitive decline. 🧠🩸🧼

When is this test performed and for which diseases? 🤔

  • To Investigate Hepatic Encephalopathy: This test is performed urgently when a patient with known liver issues exhibits sudden confusion, slurred speech, tremors, or extreme sleepiness to diagnose and track Hepatic Encephalopathy. 🚨🧠

  • To Diagnose Advanced Liver Failure: It is ordered to evaluate severe structural liver dysfunction caused by conditions like alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, or advanced Liver Cirrhosis, ensuring toxic waste buildup is caught early. 🧼🏥

  • To Evaluate Unexplained Newborn Lethargy: This examination is performed on infants who exhibit frequent vomiting, seizures, or extreme lethargy shortly after birth to screen for rare, inherited Urea Cycle Disorders. 👶🔬

  • To Screen for Reye’s Syndrome: It is ordered for children or teenagers recovering from a viral illness (such as chickenpox or flu) who develop sudden neurological changes or persistent vomiting to diagnose Reye’s Syndrome. 📉🚨

Test Specifications: 📋

  • Sample Type: Blood (Plasma – Typically collected in a green-top heparin or lavender-top EDTA tube). Note: The blood sample must be placed on ice immediately after collection and processed rapidly by the lab to ensure accurate results. 🧊🩸

  • Preparation: Fasting for 8 to 12 hours is usually required, and you should avoid strenuous physical exercise before the test. Smoking must be strictly avoided for at least 8 hours prior to sample collection, as nicotine artificially spikes ammonia levels in the blood. 🚭🚫☀️

  • Reporting: High-precision quantitative laboratory results are typically delivered within 12 to 24 hours. ⏱️
