- Description
The Pus Culture test (also known as a Wound Culture or Abscess Culture) is a vital microbiology diagnostic test used to detect and identify the specific type of bacteria or fungi causing an infection in a wound or pocket of pus. When an infection occurs, the body’s immune system sends white blood cells to fight it, resulting in the formation of pus (a thick fluid containing dead cells, tissue debris, and microbes). Along with identifying the pathogen, a pus culture and sensitivity profile tests various antibiotics against the grown bacteria to determine which medication will be most effective in completely wiping out the infection. 🦠💊🛡️
When is this test performed and for which diseases? 🤔
-
To Treat Non-Healing Wounds and Abscesses: This test is performed when an individual has a deep, painful boil or an accumulation of pus underneath the skin to diagnose severe Skin and Soft Tissue Infections (SSTIs) or localized abscesses. 🩹🚨
-
To Investigate Post-Surgical Infections: It is urgently ordered when a surgical incision site becomes red, swollen, painful, or starts leaking fluids to identify a Surgical Site Infection (SSI) and prevent it from spreading into the bloodstream. 🏥⚠️
-
To Check Chronic Diabetic Ulcers: This examination is performed for diabetic patients who develop open foot sores that show signs of infection to treat complex diseases like Diabetic Foot Infections and prevent severe tissue damage or amputation. 🦶📉
-
To Diagnose Deep Bone or Joint Infections: It is performed using fluids drawn from deep tissue areas to rule out or manage critical conditions like Osteomyelitis (bacterial infection of the bone) or septic arthritis. 🦴🔍
Test Specifications: 📋
-
Sample Type: Pus or fluid swab collected directly from the infected wound, abscess, or ulcer site. 🧪
-
Preparation: No fasting is required. However, it is highly critical that the sample is collected before starting any antibiotic treatment, as antibiotics can suppress bacterial growth in the laboratory and lead to a false-negative result. If you are already taking antibiotics, inform your doctor or lab technician immediately. ⏳☀️
-
Reporting: Preliminary growth observations are usually available within 24 to 48 hours, but final identification and antibiotic sensitivity mapping typically take 48 to 72 hours due to the time required for bacterial incubation. ⏱️
